Mirror Mirror on the Wall: Who's the FDA's Fairest ADF of All?
Faculty Mark Garofoli

Challenge accepted. Our country has made numerous strides in advancing patient care, and more particularly conducting efforts to ensure that lives within the national opioid crisis are saved and/or improved. One of those positive strides involves the FDA approval of abuse deterrent formulation (ADF) opioid medications, with the aim of preventing the transition from the misuse and/or abuse of prescription opioid medications to illicit (and possibly laced) diacetylmorphine (aka heroin). How do these formulations work, one might ask? Which ADF opioid medications are not only available on the us market, but also specifically approved as an ADF opioid medication? Are these ADFs really foolproof? Well, the street chemists of our country have already accepted the challenge to be knowledgeable on all of the above. Now it’s our turn as healthcare professionals to get up to speed on these risk reduction entities.

After the Goldrush: Testing Medical Cannabis and CBD in Chronic Pain Patients
Faculty Douglas L. Gourlay

The emergence of various cannabis products has complicated the management of chronic pain, in part due to the conflicting legal status of this group of drugs at the federal vs many state levels. Recent amendments to federal law in the form of the Hemp Farming Act 2018 by legalizing cannabidiol (CBD) derived from the hemp plant has led to an explosion of CBD containing products in the US market. Unfortunately, not all CBD products available for purchase actually are pure CBD. This session will explore the challenges associated with the application and interpretation of current urine drug testing methods.

Drugs, Documentation, and DEA: Improving Your Charting of Prescribing Rationale in 2020 and Beyond
Faculty Jennifer Bolen

Overlooking the importance of carefully documenting the rationale for the use of a controlled medication can land a prescriber in hot water with their licensing board or the DEA. This course will focus on what it takes to move beyond the problems associated with both EMR and handwritten medical charts, and into the documentation of cogent notes signaling proper patient evaluation, including risk evaluation, rationale for the use of controlled medication, and ongoing encounters with the patient.

CE/CME and Accreditation

This activity is provided by Global Education Group.

Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of frontline clinicians: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists involved in managing acute and chronic pain.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

Whether you're in a hospital or office-based practice, chronic pain patients are everywhere--and YOU are absorbing the burden of their care.

A just released report by the National Institutes of Health outlines positive steps that practitioners can take in response to the burgeoning problem of prescription medication abuse and to provide more effective pain management care to their patients. Key among these is access to pain education, and by participating in a PAINWeekEnd Conference, you'll improve your skills in medication risk evaluation and mitigation, in pain assessment and diagnosis, and in the delivery of individualized multimodal treatment.

The PAINWeekEnd agenda is purposely constructed for the busy clinician, delivering a full day of relevant, practical information, together with the opportunity for interaction and exchange with faculty and fellow attendees.

Pain Management for the Main Street Practitioner has been created to streamline the clutter of information on assessment, evolving guidelines, risk management, and changing reimbursement scenarios. Join us for a day of clinical and practice management CE/CME designed expressly for frontline clinicians. Participants can receive 3.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ as they expand their capabilities in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of chronic pain conditions.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss common methods of manipulation of abuse-deterrent formulation opioid medications
  • Discuss drug testing methods in the context of state vs federal law
  • Review DEA regulatory requirements for a valid controlled substance prescription during the COVID-19 public health emergency and using telemedicine
