Non-surgical Interventions for the Non-operated Back Pain Patient
Supported by an educational grant from SPR Therapeutics
Faculty Mehul J. Desai

Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of global disability and a highly prevalent condition that is often non-specific and chronic. The prognosis for acute LBP is good, though recurrence is common. Care pathways are complex and dependent on an assessment of history, physical examination and subjective report by the patient. Even in the hands of experienced pain management physicians the pain generator is elusive or not definitive in approximately 70% of patients. Several minimally invasive approaches have been approved by the FDA over the past several years for use in the low back pain patient who has not obtained adequate or timely relief of pain with conservative and least invasive measures (rest, NSAIDs, physical therapy, injections, etc). This activity will address newer therapies that are typically performed by physicians specializing in interventional pain management.

This activity is provided by Global Education Group.

Target Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of frontline clinicians: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists involved in managing acute and chronic pain.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of global disability and a highly prevalent condition that is often non-specific and chronic. The prognosis for acute LBP is good, though recurrence is common. Care pathways are complex and dependent on an assessment of history, physical examination and subjective report by the patient. Even in the hands of experienced pain management physicians the pain generator is elusive of not definitive in approximately 70% of patients.

Several minimally invasive approaches have been approved by the FDA over the past several years for use in the low back pain patient who has not obtained adequate or timely relief of pain with conservative and least invasive measures (rest, NASID’s, Physical Therapy, injections, etc). These newer therapies are typically offered by fellowship trained physicians specializing in interventional pain management.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Identify therapy options that may guide referral to an interventional pain management physician skilled in newer procedures.
  • Describe how to incorporate patient preference when developing a shared patient- centered care pathway
  • Describe the pain treatments that may be appropriate for pain that is specific to a certain set of low back pain conditions
